For solo coffee drinkers who do not want to be tied up to a coffee machine that brews only proprietary pods and cups, the Hamilton Beach 49981 Single-Serve Scoop Coffee Maker may just be the thing for them.
The coffee maker brews loose coffee grounds of your choice, allowing you to grind them right before brewing for optimum taste, or even roast the coffee beans yourself. You can choose any bean you want, or mix different blends or varietals.
The machine comes with a scoop you can use to scoop your grounds. You do not, however, need to pour this into a separate filter basket as the scoop incorporates the filter. Just place the scoop cum filter in the brew basket of the coffee maker, pour water into the reservoir, and you are ready to brew.
There is a secondary non-disposable filter underneath the brew basket to prevent fine grounds from pouring into your cup. To start brewing, choose between the two buttons of the control panel mounted on the machine's left-hand side. One button reads "regular" while the other is labeled "bold". Regular is your usual gravity-assisted drip coffee, while with bold, you get a richer and more flavorful cup of java that can really wake you up in the mornings after your late nights. Even a decaf coffee can be as nice and strong as coffee from a French press.
With a reservoir having a capacity of 14 ounces, you can get that much coffee from the Hamilton Beach Single-Serve, using a cup to catch it dripping from the spout below the brew basket. The cup rests on a drip tray made of stainless steel.
Apart from the drip tray, however, the Hamilton Beach 49981 Single-Serve Scoop Coffee Maker is made of plastic. Except for the top which is colored black along with a few highlights also in black, the machine is given a faux stainless steel finish. This gives the machine a modern and sophisticated look making it a fine addition to your kitchen counter.
